Transfers

Transfers are good for 3 hours on the day issued. Please request the transfer when you board the bus.

  • Using a SmarTrip card - the electronic farebox will calculate and automatically deduct the correct fare from your SmarTrip card.
  • Local bus to local bus - NO FREE transfers (except between Potomac Mills Mall and PRTC Transit Center), purchase Day Pass, pay separate fares on each bus or pay fare for entire trip on first bus and request transfer
  • Local bus to/from OmniRide Commuter Bus - For cash fare, pay fare and request the transfer
  • Local bus to/from Metro Direct - For cash fare, pay fare and request the transfer
  • OmniRide to/from OmniRide - FREE with transfer
  • OmniRide or Metro Direct to/from Other Regional bus (e.g. Metrobus, Fairfax Connector) - FREE with transfer to other bus systems. Cost varies for return trip; call Customer Service to determine the cost of your trip.

Regional Transfer Program

* As of January 4, 2009, Metrobus, Fairfax Connector and Arlington's ART will no longer distribute or accept paper transfers.

Passengers paying cash and transferring to or from the bus services listed above WILL NOT receive a transfer discount and must pay the applicable fare for each portion of their trip. In order to receive a transfer discount for those services, riders must pay with SmarTrip cards.

Until further notice, PRTC (and some other regional bus services) will continue to accept paper transfers.

The following transfer policy is in effect until January 4, 2009:

Transferring from an OmniRide bus to other regional buses is easy – and it’s FREE! You can transfer - for FREE - between OmniRide and Metro buses. Ride an OmniRide bus then transfer for FREE to any regional bus to get you closer to your destination. When transferring to another bus system, passengers should request a regional transfer as they board and pay their fare.

For the return trip, your transfer works a little differently. To transfer from other buses to OmniRide, passengers must present the driver with a validated regional transfer as they board. Regional transfers are valid only on the day they are issued. Regional transfer passengers may be required to pay an additional amount equivalent to the difference between the fare paid on the first bus and the one-way OmniRide fare. For example, a passenger transferring from a Metrobus would be required to pay the difference between the Metrobus fare and OmniRide's discounted one-way fare.

If you are using a SmarTrip card, the electronic farebox will calculate and automatically deduct the correct fare from your SmarTrip card.

These bus systems participate in the Regional Bus Transfer program:

  • Metrobus *
  • DASH
  • CUE
  • Fairfax Connector *
  • The Bus
  • ART *
  • Ride-On
